Industrial Arts (shop)
8th grade
8th Grade: There are five areas used for grading the students in shop. They are study guides, wood projects, mass production- individual and group, and attitude.
Safety is stressed at all times in the shop settings.
Study guides are worksheets the students will complete before they may start to work in shop. There are usually six study guides which will familiarize the students to general knowledge needed to work in the shop setting. The students will need to have a passing grade of at least a C average to begin their shop project.
The shop project will be chosen by the students on their own. Most of the projects are chosen from a magazine that includes kits to use in accordance with the wood they will cut, sand, drill, shape, assemble, oil, varnish, or paint. The costs of the projects usually range from $5.00 to $40.00, depending upon the student's selection.
The students will be graded on project appearance, quality of design, thoroughness, and completion of their project.
The mass production project will also be selected by the individual students. These are normally done with one student contributing to a larger group project. Our choices are usually checkerboards, peg games, wind spinners, Jacob's ladders or Tic-Tac-Toe games. Most of the mass production projects cost between $1.50 and $3.00.
Attitude grades will be based on day to day work during the wood project or mass production unit. The student should work to his or her best ability everyday in class or shop. The students need to work safely, be on-task, be respectful, and clean up their work area.
7th and 8th grade shop is only for 9 weeks.
