Press Release: 2024-2025 Voice of Democracy
The Floyd J. Tilton Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #3878 announces the start of the
2024-2025 Voice of Democracy competition. Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the
VFW’s premier scholarship program. Each year, nearly 27,000 high school students compete for
more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording
an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is:
“Is America Today Our Forefathers’ Vision?”
Why Should I Enter?
Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the post, district, state and national level. Department
(state) winners receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington DC to tour the city, be honored by
the VFW and its Auxiliary, and receive their portion of $171,000 in national awards, with the top
scholarship being $35,000.
The Voice of Democracy is open to students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in a public, private
or parochial high school or home study program by the October 31, 2024, deadline. To enter,
record an original 3-5 minute (+ or – 5 seconds) audio essay on a flash drive or other electronic
device. Participants will submit the recording, typed essay, and a completed entry form to VFW
Post #3878, 318 4th Ave., Rochelle, IL 61068 prior to midnight on October 31, 2024.
Participants can obtain a copy of the official entry form and rules through their school or by
contacting the VFW Post #3878 quartermaster, Joe Drought by phone at 815-751-5161 or by
email at qmastervfw3878@gmail.com . Participants can also download the official entry form
and rules at this website: https://www.vfw.org/community/youth-and-education/youth-
scholarships
We look forward to receiving entries from the students in our communities of eastern Ogle
County and awarding prizes to the top winner(s).
